April

  • 25th (Saturday) - SPRING WALK - New Boston. Although the first settlers did not live in New Boston, this area was the site of the first settlement of the three that developed in town. The remains of homes of two town clerks, a town treasurer and other early residents, a tavern, grist mill, and muster grounds are in that area.

May

  • 14th (Thursday) - PROGRAM - Bob Case will show films of long ago crop dusting in Vermont.
  • May 17 - TRIP - Folk Life Center and Sheldon Museum, Middlebury.
  • 25th (Monday) - MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVANCE at the Grange Hall with a short program, lunch, and some historic photos for Chittenden residents.

June

  • 9th - TRIP - Bennington Museum
  • 11th - PROGRAM: Muzzy-Davenport Award Student presentation-

July

  • 9th - PROGRAM: Allen Hitchcock, the Pittsford Furnace. At one time, most of the iron ore that supplied the furnace came from Chittenden. Other town industries built up around the charcoal, lime and manganese necessary to run the furnace.

August

  • 13th - PROGRAM: The CHS, Inc., is happy to announce that Lindsey Bishop, daughter of Susan and Ejay Bishop of Chittenden, was chosen for the Muzzy Davenport Award, given for outstanding work in history and interest in local history at Barstow. Lindsey will present her local history project at the Society meeting on August 13.
  • 20th - TRIP - Chimney Corners and DAR Museum

September

  • 10th - PROGRAM: tba
  • 19th - FALL WALK - Steam Mill Brook Road. Charles Reed Holden brought the first steam engine for lumber milling to Chittenden in 1868, creating a boom in the lumber business in the Village of Holden. Vestiges of the steam mill may still be found along this walk.

October

  • 8th - POTLUCK SUPPER AND HUMANITIES SPEAKER - Don Wickman: George Houghton: Vermont's Civil War Photographer. A hidden gem in Vermont's history is the photo graphic work completed by Brattleboro photographer George Houghton. He took poignant views of Vermont soldiers in the field, camp, and at home. This program will explain some of his life and show a number of images that brought the Civil War back to Vermont via photography.
